I really want to gain some experience in light engineering for music events. Ill do anything I can on your next event if you need help, for free, just to gain experience, and see if its something I want to do long term.
Hello, got some experience in light (nothing fancy) but before to get started, here are couple of things:
-Pretty much all light setups now use DMX protocol, so you might want to look for a bit of documentation on it.
-To control light, you either have a hardware DMX controller (bit like a midi controller, but outputs dmx instead), or you can use a PC one (Either a usb one, or better, Ethernet).
-In the case you choose the PC option (which I do), you need to look for a software to control lights. You might want to invest in a midi controller (Korg nanokontrol is nice and cheap for a starter) as moving real sliders is a better feel than using the mouse. Most good light softwares will allow you to map midi to dmx.
-Finally the rest will be down to experience indeed, as you need to know how to control different devices. Some are simple (spotlight will be one slider), some more complicated (like laser beams have multiple settings that you can individually access).
