In what sense is it 3-dimensional and/or holographic? Is it only that the image appears to be "floating in space"?
My supposition is that if the image source is 2-dimensional (HD video) then the projected image will also only be 2d, whereas a Peppers Ghost arrangement will "properly" reflect a 3d scene such as a real-life actor or other physical object (in that the observer can change their viewpoint and otherwise gets a stereoscopic view, supposing they have two eyes...).
Your supposition is right, there is no real 3d element in it but it is designed to be viewed only from the audience side. The illusion is pretty good though, specially when combined with real people on the stage.
My query, of course, somewhat ignored the intended (or what I imagine to be the intended) effect of someone controlling a floating screen/image in front of them (between them and the audience).
Is the floating image visible from both sides, or only the audience side?
The image is only viewable from the audience side but you can see a smaller version from the stage which is invisible to the audience. You also have screens on the sides of the stage outside of the audience view to position yourself.
lens adapter with a set of mirrors and a pair of vsync synchronised liquid crystals. not a very proffesional setup but I quite like the result, and I would like to see if it's worth using that thing or not.
I've got a pair of glasses with blinking liquid crystals too, but it's just a bit painful for your eyes to watch it that way
Sounds complicated and fiddly. How do you synch the LC's with the camera frames? I'm supposing the idea is to take alternating frames for left eye / right eye. Maybe it is nicer to shoot at normal frame rate with half the horizontal resolution for each "eye" (split the full frame in half). If you shoot HD, that's still going to be better than SD.
I've had an idea for ages stick mirrors or something in front of a (4:3) camera to shoot simultaneous wide (actually "short", as in not tall) views out opposite sides of a train, with the camera pointing upwards, but otherwise oriented towards, say, the left of the carriage. The view out the left would occupy the lower half of the frame, correctly oriented, and the top of the frame would be the view out the right of the carriage, inverted. I should try this some time.

The 'thing' I film through has a video input so it reads sync info from camera's composite out. Filming split frame is not a bad solution either I guess.
It is fiddly, but the trickiest part is to get both angles and distances between two views right (distance is fixed in the system I own), - it's very easy to end up with images looking in a funny brain-frying way, and much harder to have a 'watchable' 3d effect going on.
