subpixel visuals: lavamask + spaceships demo by subpixel on Vimeo
A sample of my visuals. Now with spaceships! :o)
More samples on show at subpixels.com/video
Two exciting things:
1. having made a clip to show
2. success uploading a clip to Vimeo!
The second thing was rather exciting, since the Vimeo uploader has been refusing to work for me for ages... The new flash player (and/or Firefox update) seems to have fixed the problem.
Description from Vimeo page follows.

Note: using, with square brackets instead of {}, "{video}http://vimeo.com/2075210{/video}" didn't work to embed this video. Should it have?
subpixel visuals: lavamask + spaceships demo
Realtime visuals by subpixel, captured on Sun 26/Oct/2008.
Three separate handheld clips (from a compact digital "still" camera) of my laptop's screen - yeah, ugly - joined together with a heavy noise removal to deal with the wirescreening... Not ideal, but I'm not able to record the live output directly on my machine.
The zooming in is by, obviously enough, me moving the camera closer, so not strictly the "original" visuals output.
Some details/secrets:
- The realtime mixing software is Neon v2. You can download it free (for PC only) at neonv2.com and the code has been released as an open source project.
- The backdrop is a video effect created in vvvv (the original source video is a freight train passing by a station) and sampled by videoing the output on a plasma TV
- The face was originally a photograph of a white plastic mask. The eyes were drawn on a white card with a black marker pen and placed underneath the mask. The photo was etched to make the background transparent (RGBA PNG file) and is used as a displacement map in a customised HLSL pixel shader, with the displacement amount affected by the bas level in the audio. The organic red colouring is a closeup video of a lava lamp! :o)
- The spaceships are a relatively simple Flash Actionscript (2.0) animation, created based on Chapter 5 of "Actionscript Animation". The same displacement HLSL pixel shader effect is used for this layer (with the mask image used for the displacement), with a fixed displacement displacement amount and another parameter changed to show the original content in the "transparent" section of the mask texture. Works quite nicely!
- There's also a video layer of a "laserball" (for want of a better term) behind the mask, which is what is making those nice sweeping red lines.
